Africa is home to some of the most conversational leaders on Twitter. The tweets of Ugandan Prime Minister @AmamaMbabazi, Rwanda’s @PaulKagame and Tanzania’s Jakaya Kikwete @JMKikwete are almost exclusively @replies to their followers. 60% of African leaders are on Twitter but they are currently not that well connected, either among themselves or with other world leaders. Only two accounts - that of South African President Jacob Zuma (@SApresident) and the Egyptian government (@Cabinet_eg) - have over 100,000 followers. Interestingly the new leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya all have a presence on Twitter, although none tweets personally. The young republic of South Sudan is likewise using Twitter to mark itself on the world map.
