Kenya

The Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Amolo Odinga has been active on Twitter since May 2011. A governmental Twitter account @KenyaGov was set up in April 2010 but has never been used.

Raila Odinga directly engages with his followers as part of his bid to become President in elections that have been pushed back and will now take place in 2013. The Prime Minister’s Twitter account is much more than a typical campaign account. The PM tweets generally to cover current events; wish followers well, and include updates on where he is travelling. Raila Odinga sends on average a tweet a day and regularly engages with his followers. He even held a Twitter contest (#DinnerwiththePM) for a chance to win dinner with him. He also engages with his followers by asking questions such as, “Who are your heroes?” The Prime minister frequently reports on his location and events he is attending.
