Presidency of Afghanistan ارګ

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai set up the Afghan presidential account named after the Arg, the seat of the presidential palace. The first tweet was a TwitPic of Hamid Karzai meeting with Barack Obama. The Twitter account is linked to the presidential Facebook page and most tweets contain links to posts published on Facebook or videos of official meetings on YouTube, which sometimes results in double postings in the Twitter stream. The Presidential Palace is quite active with more than six tweets a day but it is not conversational and only rarely @mentions other accounts. The account tweets in Pashto and English and is used only for broadcasting purposes of the activities of the president. The account is followed by ten other world leaders, but doesn’t follow any other Twitter user. The most re-tweeted tweet is a Facebook post of the announcement that the president is leaving for an official visit to India.

The account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan joined Twitter on 4 January 2012 under former Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul inviting followers to visit its website. The account is linked, as that of the presidential palace, to the Facebook page of the foreign ministry which generates automated tweets with links to official photos, press releases and statements of the foreign minister. The Twitter stream takes the form of one-way communication as no interaction is carried out. Indeed, the account never @replied, retweeted, or @mentioned other users.
