Twitter is just one out of many social media channels that the government of Kazakhstan is using. The Prime Minister has a personal Twitter account in Russian/Kazak and in English.

Karim Massimov, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan reportedly tweets himself using his iPad. However he has been getting some help from his staff to sustain his ambitious entry into the digital world: “I am delighted to greet all of you. Today I opened accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, On.kz and ILike.kz. http://primeminister.kz”. On Twitter his team maintains two accounts one in Kazakh/Russian and one in English with the same tweets. The prime minister rarely sends @replies or @mentions but he often greets his followers: “Thanks to all the 50 thousand followers.” And in February he was looking for an interpreter: “Can anybody do simultaneous interpreting in more than five languages? Please, reply.”

The level of activity on the official Twitter account of the Prime Minister is extremely high with over 16 tweets per day. The account which tweets only in Russian does not engage with its followers but simply broadcasts the latest information, news, blog posts, photos and videos from the official site of Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. The account only follows the Prime Minister’s two other Twitter accounts. Its most retweeted tweet is the announcement that “according to the "e-participation" index Kazakhstan has taken the second place in the world”.
