Belgium

Twitter is widely used by Belgium’s political elite. Current Prime Minister @ElioDiRupo and former Prime Minister Yves Leterme (@YLeterme) are both avid tweeps. Elio Di Rupo has literally “grown into his Twitter account” recently changing his profile picture from a black & white childhood snapshot to a more official picture wearing his trademark bow-tie. King Albert II and the Belgian royal court are not on Twitter, yet.

Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo signed up to Twitter shortly after @BarackObama in April 2007 but only became active in late 2008. In the beginning he tweeted only in French (his mother tongue), but since he became a more national (instead of regional) politician, his tweets are in French and Flemish, the official languages of Belgium. Di Rupo is mobile tweeting either from his Blackberry or an iPad. He became the first world leader to congratulate his “friend François” when Hollande was elected French President, which also became his most re-tweeted tweet (123 times). 4% of his tweets are @replies and only once did he re-tweet a message from his Socialist party @PSofficiel.
