Belgium’s royal is on Twitter and Twitter has become the main communications tool for Belgian politicians.

Tweets from Belgium leaders

Royal Palace of Belgium Belgian Royal Palace

The Belgian Royal Palace opened its Twitter account on the day of the ‘Joyous Entry’ of King Philippe on 6 September 2013. Tweets are usually sent twice, in Flemish and French two of the official Belgian languages, and some in English. Tweets primarily deal with official royal matters and royal visits. @MonarchieBe is very much a broadcasting account, without any interactions. The account does not follow other Twitter user and favourited a total of one tweet, possibly even by accident. None of the tweets contain any links to other sources, but the account is very visually focused, with almost every tweet including a picture showing the King and/or Queen at work. The most popular tweet was the Dutch tweet announcing the death of death of Her Majesty Queen Fabiola sent on 5 December 2014.

Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel

Belgium’s Prime Minister Charles Michel started his Twitter account on 22 December 2009 and is a fairly active user with an average of 1.5 tweets per day. @CharlesMichel generally posts tweets in Flemish and in French, sometimes combined in the same tweet. The account often posts pictures of his activities, and retweets most frequently from the account of Michel’s political party @MR_officiel and his spokespèerson. The tweet that has had most engagements was a French tweet sent following the Charlie Hebdo shooting to show support to French President @FHollande and the French people and to stand united against terrorism. Another popular tweet was a promise to @BarackObama to get him some Belgian waffles during the president’s visit to Belgium. Tweets about Belgian governmental activities are tagged with #begov, which is also the most used hashtag by @CharlesMichel.

Foreign Minister of Belgium didier reynders

“I’m coming on Twitter” was Didier Reynders’s unfortunate first tweet when Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs joined Twitter in May 2009. He is active with more than seven tweets a day. He tweets in French and Flemish, Belgium’s official languages, and in English @mentioning other Twitter users in every third tweet. However he is not very conversational as only a fraction of his tweets are @replies. He frequently retweets the tweets sent by his ministry @BelgiumMFA, the royal household @MonarchieBe and shares news stories from Belgian media publications such as La Libre Belgique @lalibrebe, La Dernière Heure @ladh, @RTBFinfo @LeSoir and @DeMorgen. His most retweeted tweet was his response to the shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels in May 2014. Didier Reynders tweets an interesting mix of personal thoughts and political statements.

Foreign Ministry of Belgium Belgium MFA

In October 2013, the Belgian Foreign Ministry’s press office changed the name of its twitter account from @MFABelgiumMedia to @BelgiumMFA. Tweets are in French, Flemish and English and sent on average once a day. 19% percent of the tweets are retweets, unsurprisingly mostly retweeted from Belgium’s Foreign Minister @DReynders. A large majority of the tweets contain links to further information about the daily activities and announcements of the Minister and the Foreign Ministry. The most retweeted tweet announced that Minister Reynders joined European colleagues in the call upon the Russian authorities to #FreeSavchenko. The Foreign Ministry is mutually connected with 25 other political leaders and foreign offices on Twitter.
