In early 2010, Prime Minister George Papandreou set up an institutional-personal Twitter account for the @PrimeMinisterGR which has been managed by Greece’s successive prime ministers since. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias both also maintain personal accounts. In fact, Alexis Tsipras uses two accounts @atsipras and @tsipras_eu to address a Greek and international audience respectively.

Prime Minister of Greece a.tsipras

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has had a personal Twitter account since 13 July 2011. He has been fairly active, almost twice a day on average, although activity has clearly spiked during his visit to the US in January 2013, while in opposition, as well as the most recent election campaign in January 2015. A few days before the election, the account was used to organise an online Q&A – citizens submitted a total of 33,996 questions and comments using the hashtag #asktsipras, while a select few were answered by Alexis Tsipras on an interview live-streamed on the website of the party-affiliated newspaper Avgi. @atsipras is clearly oriented towards a Greek audience, tweeting almost exclusively in Greek about official visits and meetings, interviews in international media, campaign appearances and party politics, as well as speeches in the Greek Parliament. The account’s most popular tweet is one thanking Dr.House (i.e. British actor Hugh Laurie) for his congratulatory tweet, wishing him luck in his new role as Prime Minister.

Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras

Alexis Tsipras set up the @Tsipras_EU account in January 2014 in his capacity as Vice President of the @EuropeanLeft. Tweeting exclusively in English, the account was used to introduce – then leader of the opposition and largely unknown – Alexis Tsipras to an international audience, and position him as a modern European leader of the Left. Activity peaked around the European Parliament elections; however, a year later, the account has remained active. Tweets revolve around official meetings with foreign leaders and European counterparts, speeches in international fora, and interviews in major international newspapers. Bite-sized messages revolving around #Greece and the European Left’s pursuit to #ChangeEurope reveal that the account is being used to take control of the message and get it through to key European media and the wider European audience.

Government of Greece PrimeMinisterGR

@PrimeMinisterGR is an institutional-personal account set up in January 2010 by digitally-savvy Prime Minister George Papandreou. It has since passed on to Prime Ministers Papademos, Pikrammenos, Samaras and most recently Tsipras. The account tweets exclusively in Greek, with the occasional tweet in English. A shift in the style, volume and themes of the tweets has been evident as the account is being passed on to consecutive Prime Ministers. Since Alexis Tsipras took over in January 2015, @PrimeMinisterGR has become particularly active and is being used to live tweet the prime minister’s speeches in the Greek Parliament (#vouli), sharing links to videos from speeches, statements and photos from official visits in Greece and abroad. The account has more than doubled its followers in the past year.

Foreign Minister of Greece Nikos Kotzias

A Professor of Political Theory acting as Foreign Minister, as his Twitter bio states, Nikos Kotzias has been a prolific tweep since 1 November 2011, commenting on political developments in Greece and not shying away from controversy. In fact, his most popular tweets have been sent after taking over as Minister of Foreign Affairs, in which he responded to critique from political opponents and media about his style of managing the country’s foreign policy. Since then, he has been mainly retweeting @GreeceMFA sharing photos and statements from official visits and meetings with his counterparts and ambassadors, as well as interviews in Greek and international media.
