Lithuanian leaders became increase in activity mainly because of the Lithuanian EU Presidency in the second half of 2013. In early 2014 the @EU2013LT was renamed to @LithuaniaMFA and became the official Twitter account of the foreign ministry in Vilnius. The foreign ministry also maintains the @Lithuania account promoting the country to a worldwide audience.

Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius joined Twitter on 24 March 2011 but was passive until Lithuania took over the rotating EU presidency on 1 July 2013. Algirdas Butkevičius does not engage with his followers, @replying or @mentioning others only on rare occasions. Frequency of his tweets recently increased and continues to be posted mainly in English. Government of Lithuania LR Vyriausybė

Lithuania’s official governmental Twitter account was set up in May 2009 under former Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. This account has been dormant for the most of 2014, but is active again since since November. The account tweets in English, mostly retweeting the prime minister’s tweets, posting his statements and sharing official pictures of his meetings with foreign diginitaries.

Foreign Ministry of Lithuania Lithuania MFA

Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry @LithuaniaMFA is among the five best connected foreign ministries in the world, having established mutual relations with 86 peers. The foreign ministry in Vilnius created the @EU2013LT for its EU presidency in December 2010 and renamed the account to @LithuaniaMFA in early 2014. The foreign ministry tweets on average eight times a day and half of its tweets are retweets, mainly of Foreign Minister @LinkeviciusL. The most used hashtag is #Ukraine and it illustrates that, as the other Lithuanian leaders, the foreign ministry also monitors the situation in Ukraine.
