Portugal

The Portuguese government was among the first to adopt Twitter in its communication mix, but the accounts are either dormant or automatically tweeting from Facebook or the presidential website.

Tweets from Portugal leaders

President of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva

Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva is unilaterally following 38 world leaders, but so far he is only mutually connected with seven of them. Cavaco Silva only started to tweet in March 2011 and his Twitter feed is automatically generated by his Facebook activity where he has 186,000 likes. He has never retweeted, @mentioned or @replied to anyone, hence the relatively low number of followers. Typical tweets are mainly official announcements about upcoming events, decorations or honors, information about state visits and quotes from speeches.

Presidency of Portugal Presidência

The Portuguese presidency (@Presidencia) was an early adopter of Twitter, setting up an institutional profile in November 2008 long before the general public would recognize the new micro-blogging tool in Portugal. In those days, only tech and some vanguard journalist used the tool. The account automatically broadcasts official activities of the president with links to the presidential website. Typical tweets are about decorations, state visits and quotes from speeches. The account which is linked to the presidential website has never shared a single picture. @Presidencia is followed by 29 world leaders but has not reciprocated yet.

Prime Minister of Portugal Pedro Passos Coelho

Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho who signed up to Twitter in March 2009 seems to have used the micro-blogging service solely during his election campaign. Since 7 June 2011, two days after being elected as prime minister, his personal Twitter account has gone silent and has been dormant ever since. During the campaign he shared mainly videos and news stories as well as policy statements in 140 characters. However he never tweeted personally. Pedro Passos Coelho seems to have given up on social media since his Facebook page with 128,000 likes is also dormant since 26 December 2012.

Government of Portugal Governo de Portugal

The Portuguese government created an institutional Twitter account on 14 April 2009 but stopped its Twitter activity on 17 January 2012 and only reactivated the @govpt account on 8 September 2014 “to inform the citizens about its regular activities and different initiatives”. The tweets are official announcements about the government’s activity and each tweet starts with an acronym for each ministry mentioned or PM for the Prime Minister. The governemental account has never been conversational, never tweeting a single @mention nor a @reply and only once used a hashtag.

Government of Portugal MNE GOV PT

The official Twitter account of the Portuguese foreign ministry mainly chronicles the activities of Foreign Minister Rui Machete who does not have a personal Twitter account. The account was set up in late 2013 but only started to post its first tweet on 20 March 2014. The foreign ministry tweets every second day but is not very well connected, mutually following only three other foreign ministries. The Portuguese foreign ministry tweets are all in Portuguese language and rarely uses hashtags, retweets or @mentions other Twitter users. Not surprising that is has such a low number of followers.
