“Hello! Because there have been false accounts made in my name, I decided to be here myself.” This is the first tweet sent by President Traian Băsescu on 2 November 2009, just weeks before the Romanian presidential elections. President Băsescu used his Twitter account purely as a campaign account to get re-elected. After beating his opponent Mircea Geoană in the run-off election on 6 December 2009, the account only sent three more tweets wishing his followers a Happy Christmas, a Happy New Year and to congratulate Romanian filmmaker Florin Şerban for winning the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010. The account, which was never conversational or engaging with its followers, has been silent ever since.
