Foreign Minister of Sweden Margot Wallström

Margot Wallström became active on Twitter on 5 May 2011 when she worked as Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict. @MargotWallstrom who became foreign minister in October 2014 only has a fraction of the followers of her predecessor @CarlBildt who was among the best connected world leaders. Wallström doesn’t use Twitter to connect with her peers and is mutually following only the @EU_Commission, and the External Action Service @eu_eeas. The account tweets on average every second day mainly policy statements in English.

Foreign Ministry of Sweden Utrikesdepartementet

The Swedish Foreign Ministry tweets in Swedish @utrikesdep and in English @sweMFA, two accounts set up in May 2010 and managed by six people in the ministry’s press service pictured on their cover picture who regularly sign their replies. Most of their tweets are about foreign politics and news. The most popular tweet of the foreign ministry is a tweet against sexual discrimination. As their tweets are generally about politics, the number one hashtag is #svpol, the Swedish abbreviation for Swedish Politics. The English language account @SweMFA is less active than the Swedish one but is among the top ten best connected foreign affairs accounts in the world, unilaterally following 335 other world leaders and mutually connected with 69. @SweMFA also has a very useful list of the 126 Swedish embassies which are all on Twitter and Facebook since the end of February 2013 after an executive order from then Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
