Twitter and social media in general have played an important role in the political events in Ukraine. The entire Ukrainian leadership is active on the social network and the institutional accounts of the government and of the foreign ministry have seen exponential growth since 2014. Extensive usage of English makes Ukraine’s leaders accounts a valuable information source for the international community.

Petro Poroshenko's personal Twitter account was created on 24 February 2009 and had been active only intermittently. In April 2014 the previous tweets were archived on the @PoroshenkoOld account and a new account was set up to document the activities of Ukraine’s president. Tweets highlight main events in Ukraine; most important messages are repeated in English. The account often posts pictures and videos illustrating Petro Poroshenko’s activities. @Poroshenko’s most retweeted tweet, sent on 25 January 2015 contains only of hashtag #WorldwakeupRussiainvadedUkraine and a picture stating the same message. @Poroshenko is not yet well connected to his peers, mutually following only five other world leaders, including @GermanyDiplo and Lithuanian President Dalia @Grybauskaite_LT.

Presidency of Ukraine APU

The Twitter account of Ukraine's presidential administration was inaugurated on 9 July 2014. The @APUkraine Twitter account is fairly active with 13 tweets per day in Ukrainian and in English. The account chronicles the activities of President Poroshenko linking to the official press releases and makes good use of the visuals with every tweet containing at least one if not several images. Its most retweeted tweet is a picture of Queen Elizabeth congratulating Ukraine’s on its Independence Day. The presidential account has made an effort to connect with peers, unilaterally following 66 but is mutually connected to 12 other world leaders.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk joined Twitter on 23 September 2013 and he posts on average two tweets per day, mostly in Ukrainian. The account often posts videos of his speeches and pictures of his meetings with foreign dignitaries. Almost every post is retweeted on average 85 times. The prime minister himself rarely interacts with other Twitter users. Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s posts are more personal, sometimes even sarcastic. Besides informing about main government decisions, Yatsenyuk shares his opinion on the Ukraine’s crisis developments. The previous Ukrainian government set up three Twitter accounts in Ukrainian (@Kabmin_UA), Russian (@Kabmin_UA_r) and English (@Kabmin_UA_e) in July 2011. The Ukrainian account is the leading one, while other two only duplicate most important translated tweets. The @Kabmin_UA account is among the most active accounts of all world leaders, sending on average 28 tweets per day. In a very formal way, it tweets about governmental decisions, Prime Minister’s Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s statements and current meetings. It is not conversational, never retweeting, @mentioning or @replying to other users. The three accounts mutually follow each other but do not follow any other foreign leader. All tweets are linked to articles on the official portal of the Ukrainian government but the accounts have never posted a visual.

Foreign Ministry of Ukraine MFA of Ukraine

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs started on Twitter on 13 May 2010 and in 2014 it became an active source of information reporting on the latest news in Ukraine with an average 56 tweets per day. The @MFA_Ukraine account is the fifth most active Twitter among all world leaders and 86% of its tweets are retweets often of the presidential accounts @APUkraine, @poroshenko, Foreign Minister @PavloKlimkin and the spokesperson of the foreign ministry @YPerebyinis. Tweets are posted in English and Ukrainian, but other languages are also used. After United Nations General Assembly decision to declare Crimea referendum as invalid and support Ukraine’s territorial integrity, MFA posted a series of “thank you” tweets in various languages. The foreign ministry is also very well connected with its peers mutually connected with 64 other world leaders.
