When President Calderon started to use Twitter on 16 May 2010 he announced that his office would be handling his Twitter feed but that he would be personally tweeting on special occasions. He often uses Yfrog to snap and share pictures with his Blackberry from his helicopter. Felipe Calderon has been fairly conversational as 17% of his tweets are @replies. In late June 2012 the President made headlines with a tweet that was to become his most re-tweeted, weighing in on the presidential debate live on TV. Felipe Calderon is also one of the most connected world leaders mutually following the presidents of Argentina and Chile and unilaterally followed by 19 other world leaders.

President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto joined Twitter in March 2007, just three weeks after President Barack Obama, however he only started to tweet on 11 November 2011 coinciding with his election campaign. Peña Nieto has been tweeting five times/day on average and 20% of his tweets are @replies to his followers from his Blackberry. During the campaign he has been using foursquare to share the location of his campaign meetings. He is not yet well connected with other world leaders following only the Spanish Prime Minister and being followed by the President of Guatemala and the Presidency of Costa Rica. His most retweeted tweet is his thanks to the electorate: “Today, my greatest gratitude is to the millions of Mexicans who voted for me and believed in this project. Thank you very much, I will fulfill.”

The institutional account of the Mexican Presidency is entirely dedicated to El Presidente Calderón tweeting his news from Tweetdeck. Over half of the tweets are signed FCH, however it is unlikely that he has written any of the statements personally. The presidential administration tweets the daily agenda of his meetings and promotes live broadcasts on the official presidential website. The account has sent over 11 tweets/day, is not conversational and hasn’t sent any @mentions or @replies.

The official account of the Mexican government promotes the work of all government departments, frequently @mentioning the official Twitter accounts of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Tourism, Education and the Economy. The account is not very conversational, but it gives practical advice to its Twitter citizens such as the end of daylight saving time: “Today, before going to sleep, remember your clock one hour delay.” The most popular governmental tweet is the announcement of holidays “for schools and public administrations for the Bicentennial celebrations on 15, 16 and 17 September; voluntary for companies.”
