The island nation in the South Pacific is using Twitter communicate on a range of issues. The office of the Prime Minister @FijiPM, as well as the government is tweeting @FijiGovernment and @FijiRepublic to promote the island nation.

The office of Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama started its Twitter activity in October 2011 during the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) World Telecom 2011 Summit held in Geneva. The Prime Minister who set a timetable for parliamentary elections in 2014 has repeatedly tweeted that the “Fijian Government is always open to dialogue as long as it is with open minds, respect for sovereignty, territory.” In April 2012 the effects of tropical cyclone Daphne, which caused severe floods in the western part of the island took centre stage on the Prime Minister’s Twitter stream with frequent mentions of donors and aid agencies. The account is characterized by a large-number of hashtags with three hashtags on average in every tweet.

The Fiji government only started to tweet in mid-May 2012. The account relays tweets similar to those sent by the Prime Minister. Another account @FijiRepublic is dedicated to promoting the island as an attractive tourist destination. The most popular tweet on the Fiji Republic’s Twitter stream is the publication of a report that “#Fiji ranked the #happiest country; of 58 countries, home to happiest people”
