Two years after reactivating her Twitter account, in the run-up to presidential elections, Brazilian President Dilma Roussef has become Latin America’s fourth most followed leader on Twitter. The account of the Foreign Ministry (@ItamaratyGovBr) is the second best connected in Latin America.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff joined Twitter on 10 April 2010 and used it years mostly for electoral purposes during her first election campaign garnering 200,000 followers before abandoning her Twitter activity once elected. For more than two and a half years her account was dormant but had reached 1.8 million followers when she reactivated her account in September 2013. Dilma Rousseff tweets on average seven times per day exclusively in Portuguese and only occasionally shares videos or pictures of her meetings. 90% of her tweets are retweeted and on average 209 times, her most popular being her re-election tweet in 2014 for four more years. During the FIFA World Cup in 2014 she also used six-second Vine videos to promote the event held in Brasil pleading with her followers to transform the Cup of Cups (#CopaDasCopas) into the Cup against Racism (#CopaContraoRacismo). @Dilmabr is well connected to her peers, mutually following 18 other world leaders.

Presidency of Brazil Casa Civil

The chief of staff of the presidency joined Twitter on 2013. The account is another governmental newsfeed, releasing information about President Rousseff and government programs, such as the infrastructure Growth Acceleration Program and the social housing program (Minha Casa Minha Vida #MCMV). A third of its tweets are retweets, mainly of other governmental agencies, such as Portal Brasil (@portalbrasil) and Blog do Planalto (@blogplanalto).

Government of Brazil Imprensa Presidência

The Twitter account of the Press Secretary of the Brazilian presidential administration was created under President Lula to share government news on 23 April 2010. The @imprensaPR Twitter account has been dormant since July 2014 and used to share government information about President Rousseff’s agenda and speeches. The English language Twitter account of the @BrazilGovNews is still active and tweets the latest news from the Brazilian government. A new Secretary of Communications has been appointed by President Rousseff and may reactivate the @imprensaPR account.

Foreign Ministry of Brazil MRE Brasil–Itamaraty

This Twitter account of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry is the second best connected foreign ministry in Latin America mutually following 43 other world leaders on its Portuguese account (@ItamaratyGovBr) and 20 on the English account (@ItamaratyGovBr) which was launched on 25 September 2014. Both Twitter accounts are named after the palace in Brasilia which houses the ministry. @ItamaratyGovBr is fairly active and tweets on average seven times per day, 401% being retweets mainly of the @BlogPlanalto, @PortalBrasil and President @Dilmabr and documents the activities of Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira as well as overseas trips of President Dilma Rousseff.
