Sebastian Piñera was the first Chilean politician to join Twitter in February 2008 and the first leader to tweet himself. His Twitter stream is closely watched by the media for any “Piñericosas”, his legendary slip of the tongue in 140 characters.

Ever since “trying out Twitter” for the first time on 18 April 2008 the media has had a close eye on the spelling mistakes and grammatical errors Sebastian Piñera makes on his Twitter account. His most famous Twitter faux pas was when he was “Looking at Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica from the Strait of Magellan”. When Twitter users pointed out that it was impossible to see Antarctica, 1300km away, he replied: “Thanks for spotting the mistake. You see we all make mistakes!” His most retweeted tweet is his reaction to the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners on 13 October 2010: “What emotion! What happiness! So proud to be Chilean! And thanks to God!” Piñera is also one of the most connected world leaders on Twitter mutually following 7 other peers.

The government of Chile only became active on Twitter on 23 May 2009 and is among the most prolific with over 11,000 tweets, i.e. averaging over 9 tweets a day. The account tweets the agenda of the Chilean government and the activities of Chilean ministers and secretaries. Not surprisingly the government of Chile frequently retweets President @SebastianPinera. Hashtags are used rarely – the most mentioned being #cuentaanual (245) and #21deMayo (98). @GobiernodeChile is followed by five other governments, but doesn’t reciprocate.
